She's a Rhode Island Red and is a good dual purpose breed, meaning she will lay nice large eggs and also make a yummy meal when she is past her prime. Don't worry, this little girl will have a couple of back yard bliss years before then. Her breed lays XL brown eggs and will have a pretty red coat. She is supposed to be an easy going hen, which will work well with Minerva and Louise, who are possibly the most friendly chickens ever.
In case you're curious about our other chickens, we have only two more. Minerva is a black sex link. This is a cross between a Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock. It's also dual purpose and we sure like her a lot. She's really good at finding roly poleys in the garden.
The other, Louise is a white leghorn. She is super friendly and lays a ton of eggs. White leghorns are a very choice for egg production. They lay upwards of 300 eggs per year. Ours laid through the winter! Louise is a favorite of A, who absolutely loves animals. She is definitely his chicken.
If you are wondering about our name choices, yes, our boys love these books.
