Trouble in Lactation Land

It seems like since we started supplementing with formula my supply just keeps going down, down, down. I've been supplementing for about 2 months now due to our pediatricians recommendation in order to get the twinsies to gain weight. I knew this would happen and was reluctant to give in, but the "bad mommy" pressure got to me and I gave in. Faster than I realized the boys went from taking two ounces of formula after each feeding to only nursing three times a day and following up with 3-4 ounces of formula each time. I'm not sure how it got so far out of my hands and it has really been bothering me. I decided to give it a good fight and see if I can remedy the situation any. I want to breastfeed my babies!

So here's my plan (in addition to offering the breast every time) ...not in any particular order:

1) Fenugreek: Two pills three times a day. This is an ancient herb that comes from a bean-like plant. It's known for increasing milk production and for making you smell like maple syrup while taking it...oh joy.

2) Good Old H2O: Keeping hydrated is important in maintaining and increasing milk supply.

3)Oatmeal: Not sure why this works, but once again the ladies of the EFF board on thebump.com have come to my aide with this suggestion.

4:Lactation cookies: This is my favorite part. Containing oatmeal and flax, these have been known to help many a mama with supply issues. Thank you Hippy for the recipe. Available here: Rumble in the Kitchen

So wish me luck and stay tuned for a couple of great giveaways and a yogurt making tutorial!!!

  1. Oh my, I am so sorry that this has happened. May God bless you with success in feeding your littlest guys.

  2. I'm going through the same thing....I'm not supplementing with formula exactly, but as my girls are getting bigger I know I am not going to be producing enough. Hence the need to up the supply. I'm doing the fenugreek and oats as well.

    Good luck.

  3. awww, so sorry. I went through something similar with my daughter. Don't be too hard on yourself. You are doing the best you can for you babies and that's what's important! Best of luck with the fenugreek etc. It helped me. :)

  4. If you're a tea-drinker you might consider the Yogi Nursing Support tea... it has fenugreek and a few other herbs that are supposed to encourage milk production.

    Good luck!
